Non-brittle materials from brittle components
Fibers and matrices are brittle, but the CMC is not ! This is possible thanks to the presence of an interphase that acts as a crack deviator. The matrix can be subject to multi-cracking, leading to a non-linear mechanical behavior exhibiting progressive damage.
